Early Life and Education
Geerat J. Vermeij was born in The Hague, Netherlands in 1946. He was born with a congenital eye disorder that left him blind from birth. Despite this, Vermeij was determined to pursue a career in science and was accepted to the University of Amsterdam, where he earned his bachelor's degree in biology in 1969. He then went on to earn his master's degree in zoology from the University of Utrecht in 1971 and his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.

Vermeij began his career as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Davis in 1975. He then moved to the University of Maryland, College Park in 1977, where he was a professor of zoology until 1983. In 1983, he returned to the University of California, Davis, where he has been a professor of geology and evolutionary biology ever since.
